    The ANKH

The Egyptian Ankh is often referred to as the key of life

because it symbolises the idea of life.

This ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol was used thousands of years ago to represent not only eternal life but also rebirth and the union of male and female. It is a theme which is repeated throughout ancient Egyptian art.

At first glance, the Ankh looks like a modified cross with a loop at the top. In ancient tomb paintings and Egyptian works of art, the ankh is usually held by a powerful official such as Pharaoh or member of the royal family. When the Ankh is interpreted as symbolic of the union of man and woman, it also symbolises the blessing of life found in the children of that union.
